Stewart Bruce Terry papers, 1831 - 1916

The collection includes one volume with genealogical information about the Terry family, copies of correspondence from family members to Terry and from Terry to other family members, and a revised copy of a journal kept during the Civil War. It also includes "A Prisoner of War," a handwritten manuscript by Terry regarding his experiences in Cahaba Prison; Terry's diaries kept during the Civil War; other genealogical information collected by Terry, for the Bruce and Bennett families and going back to the 18th century; receipts and other financial information; original copies of correspondence to and from Terry family members, including Stewart's letters while in Cahaba; land deeds, pension documents, and other official records; and other similar materials. Some of the letters and documents belonged to or came from Terry's father Sherman Terry, including letters from John Terry and Lewis Terry.

Stewart Bruce Terry was born near Kossuth, Iowa on 1 June 1843. He was educated for the ministry but instead became a successful civil and criminal lawyer. He served with the 4th Iowa Cavalry Volunteers during the Civil War and was wounded at Vicksburg, becoming a prisoner for eleven months at the Confederate prison of Cahaba, Alabama.
